To fight Zakum you need an Eye of Fire. You earn it by finishing Adobis's three trials in the El Nath Dead Mine: Stage 1 (find the Fire Ore in the Unknown Dead Mine), Stage 2 (the Breath of Lava jump quest) and Stage 3 (bring 30 Zombie's Lost Gold Tooth). On BeyondMS the jump quest can be skipped for 50,000,000 mesos, but Stage 1 can't. You can do the whole prequest alone.

Requirements

Level 50+ to get the El Nath council's approval and to enter Stage 1.
Party: none needed. Stage 1 takes 1–6 players, and a Discord reply confirms you can do the prequest alone.
Items: 30 × Zombie's Lost Gold Tooth for Stage 3. Stage 1 and 2 give you the other two pieces.
Mesos (optional): 50,000,000 to skip the Stage 2 jump quest.
Weekly runs: 10 per week. Type @weekly in-game to see how many you have left.

Get the council's approval
In El Nath, talk to any of the El Nath job instructors: Tylus, Robeira, Rene, Arec or Pedro. Pick "Please allow me to do the Zakum Dungeon Quest." At level 50+ they grant you "concession" to join the fight against Zakum. Without this step, Adobis only says "Beware, for the power of olde has not been forgotten...".
Walk to The Door to Zakum
Leave El Nath toward the Dead Mine and follow the route below to The Door to Zakum, where Adobis stands. Save this map on a teleport rock; you'll be back here often.
Stage 1: enter the Unknown Dead Mine
Talk to Adobis and choose Enter the Unknown Dead Mine (Stage 1). You need to be in a party (a party of one is fine) and the party leader has to talk to him. You have 30 minutes.
Stage 1: find the Fire Ore
The mine is a maze of numbered rooms. Hit chests and rocks to find the Fire Ore. The community picture guide shows this route: 11-1 (chest) → 9-2 (chest) → 14-1 (chest) → 4-2 (rock) → 16-3 (chest) → 16-2 (chest) → 16-5 (rock). You reach Area 16 through room 10 or room 7. Some chests warp you back to the start, which can help or hurt. Area 16's portal takes you back to Aura. While you're in there, you can also grab 30 Paper Document for the bonus. Needs in-game check: does the Fire Ore always come from the same chest/rock order on BeyondMS, or is it random? The picture guide is shown as a fixed route.

Stage 1: hand the Fire Ore to Aura
The party leader gives the Fire Ore (and the 30 Paper Document, if you have them) to Aura. Then everyone talks to Aura to get their own Piece of Fire Ore. With the documents, each member also gets 20,000 EXP and 5 Return Scroll to Dead Mine. Make room in your Etc/Use tabs first. Leave through the exit portal.
Stage 2: Breath of Lava (or pay to skip it)
Back at The Door to Zakum, talk to Adobis and choose the Breath of Lava. It's a jump quest over lava (Breath of Lava <Level 1> → Breath of Lava <Level 2>). Falling can kill you. Reach the end to get The Breath of Lava. Skip: on BeyondMS this jump quest can be skipped for 50,000,000 mesos. Needs in-game check: which NPC and menu option takes the 50,000,000 meso Breath of Lava skip (probably Adobis)?
Stage 3: 30 Zombie's Lost Gold Teeth
Hunt Miner Zombie in the Dead Mine for 30 × Zombie's Lost Gold Tooth. Its base drop rate is 2%, so at BeyondMS's 3x drop rate that's roughly 500 kills. Then talk to Adobis with the Piece of Fire Ore, the The Breath of Lava and the 30 teeth. He takes them and gives you 5 × Eye of Fire. The prequest is done.
Fight Zakum
With an Eye of Fire in your inventory, take the Zakum door at The Door to Zakum to Entrance to Zakum Altar. There, the expedition leader talks to Adobis to make the expedition. The leader also needs an Eye of Fire, which is dropped on the altar to summon Zakum. Zakum always drops a Zakum Certificate, which you'll need for Horntail. Weekly: 10 runs (check yours with @weekly). Needs in-game check: BeyondMS Zakum expedition size and level/rebirth limit. Cosmic defaults are 6–30 players, level 50+.

Costs and skips

Breath of Lava skip: 50,000,000 mesos (optional).
Can't skip: Stage 1 (the Dead Mine). Winter: "you still have to do stg1".
Rumor: one player wrote in July 2026 that you can skip Stage 1 and just pay for Stage 2. Needs in-game check: can Stage 1 be skipped on BeyondMS now? The official reply says no.

Entry and runs

Door: the Zakum door at The Door to Zakum only opens if you completed the trials and carry an Eye of Fire.
Expedition NPC: Adobis at Entrance to Zakum Altar.
Disconnects: if you DC, log back into the same channel; you're warped back in automatically as long as at least one member is still inside (#faq, Bossing Issues). GMs won't warp anyone in.

Tips

Do Stage 1 in a party if you can. Everyone gets their own Piece of Fire Ore from one Fire Ore.
Bring potions and a few Return Scrolls. Exiting the mine sends you to The Door to Zakum.
Zakum is one of the three certificates for the Horntail Squad Badge. Grab the Zakum Certificate before you start Horntail.
